Research Projects:
- Combustion Instabilities in Liquid Rocket Engines:
Thermo-acoustic instabilities are created through the coupling of the unsteady heat release and the acoustics of the system. These instabilities create large oscillations in the pressure amplitude which can lead to failure of the combustion system. These instabilities and the coupling between acoustics, hydrodynamics and the unsteady combustion heat release are being studied using both Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) and Linear-Eddy Mixing (LEM).
Projects:
Jensen
-3-D Simulation of a single coaxial CH4/O2 injector from a full rig containing 82. Used to study the characteristics of a single injector as a base point for a simulation of the full 82 injector rig.
10 injectors
-2-D simulation of 10 coaxial CH4/O2 injectors based of the full 82 injector rig. Used to examine the interaction between jets.
Continuous Variable Resonance Chamber (CVRC)
-3-D simulation of a single coaxial CH4/O2 injector rig with varying oxidizer injector length. Used to study combustion instabilities in a high pressure combustors.
